Concept to Creation
Ismay, having bought the White Star Line at 30 years of age, created both ships and a company large enough to conceive the Titanic. Upon reflection then, to have produced Dawpool earlier will not come as a surprise. Thomas Henry Ismay and a William Imrie learnt their skills in ship management from the old firm of Imrie, Tomlinson & Co. The first vessel owned by Ismay albeit partly, was the brigantine Angelita from which time he went on to operate a small fleet of vessels but the turning point really came when in 1868 he formed his T.H.Ismay & Co, bought the house-flag of Pilkington and Wilson’s White Star Line for £1,000, brought William into his partnership and both never looked back. During their journey into ship ownership, Ismay and Imrie both made personal friends of Edward James Harland and Hamburg-born Gustav Wilhelm Wolff both of whom had established their ship-building company at Queen’s Island, Belfast. It was to these gentlemen that Ismay & Imrie Co turned to build their Dawpool.
